Bobby Dunbar Biography
(American Boy Who Was Lost & Then Found)Born: 1908
Born In: Opelousas, Louisiana, United States
Advanced SearchBobby Dunbar was a four-year-old American boy who suddenly went missing while on a family picnic in Louisiana and apparently found eight months later with an unknown man in Mississippi. While both William Cantwell Walters, an itinerant handyman in whose custody, Bobby was found and a woman by the name of Julia Anderson insisted the child was Anderson’s son, the court held that the boy was Bobby and allowed Percy and Lessie Dunbar, the parents, to retain custody of the child. He lived out the rest of his life as Bobby Dunbar, married and fathered four children before he died. More than nine decades after Bobby went missing, a DNA profiling at the behest of Dunbar's granddaughter established that the child who was found was not the Bobby Dunbar who had gone missing. The real Bobby Dunbar was yet again classified as a missing child but is no longer under investigation by the authorities due to the passage of time. The incident that was widely reported by the press and caused sharp divides among the public also exposes how that era defined childhood, motherhood, and communal mores.
