Barry Manilow, an American singer and songwriter, is currently 80 years old and has a career spanning over 50 years. Born on June 17, 1943, in Brooklyn, New York, Manilow attended Eastern District High School, graduating in 1961. He briefly studied at City College of New York before transferring to New York College of Music. He further studied Musical Theatre at Julliard’s School of performing arts.
Manilow’s personal life began in high school when he met Susan Deixler, who they engaged in 1964. However, their marriage was strained due to Manilow’s growing career, leading to their divorce in 1966. He later dated Lorna Luft in 1972, who they maintained a close friendship. Manilow then got romantically involved with Linda Allen, a television production assistant, from 1984 to 1991. In 1978, Manilow met Garry Kief, a television executive and his manager, and they secretly dated for years. After same-sex marriage was legalized in California in 2014, Manilow and Kief exchanged their nuptials.
Manilow’s career began in 1964 after meeting Bro Herrod, a CBS director. He worked as a pianist, music arranger, and producer, and composed original music used in Broadway musicals. He also composed commercial and television jingles, including State Farm Insurance and Band-Aid. He also did commercials for Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pepsi, and McDonald’s, and became a musical director for Callback, a TV series for WCBS-TV.
Manilow was signed to Columbia/CBS by Vice President and artist Tony Orlando in 1967. Under CBS, he released several album compilations and soundtracks. His high-selling albums include Barry Manilow and Barry Manilow II. The award-winning recording artist had his major breakthrough in the British market with the release of Even Now, which contained four hit singles that also topped the US charts. Ready to Take a Chance is one of the singles that garnered him recognition globally and an Oscar nomination.
In 2006, Manilow released a US certified platinum covers album titled The Greatest Songs of The Fifties, which sold over 3 million copies and peaked at number one on the US Billboard 200. His follow-up album, The Greatest Songs of The Sixties, also debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200. Some of his best-selling albums include The Greatest Love Songs of All Time, Night Songs, and My Dream Duets.

Manilow has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including the Special Tony Award won in 1977, three-time American Music Awards, the Emmy Award in 1977 and 2006, and the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Songwriters Walk of Fame. As of January 2024, his estimated net worth is estimated to be $120 million.
