Ashley went back to school to pursue teaching performance for actors where she would earn herself a degree and be employed. She was advised by a professor that she could at least go to Northwestern University which had a performance studies program.

Asley attended the program hoping that she would be able to direct and devise plays. In an interview with Ashley, she said that she regrets attending the program because it was very competitive. This made her hate anything that concerned academia. Nicole’s parents brought her to The Second City where she attended an improv class.

She wrote a variety of comedy. Ashley realized that the best thing for her was to write and perform comedy on her own. She wrote a piece that was not welcomed very well by the whites. The piece had started as a solo verse and later a music video. Ashley finished her degree course and was offered to do her Ph.D. by the school.

The application packet given to her was due within three days. The show wanted to identify women, people of color and those who had no agents and managers. After some weeks she received an email from the Full Frontal with Samantha Bee and was told to do another packet.

Ashley got a skype call with Sam, Jo Miller, and Miles Khan who were executive producers of the show who challenged her by asking questions in which she answered them academically. Nicole succeded in the interview and she got a place at Full Frontal with Samantha Bee.
