Asha Bhosle (born September 8, 1933), often known as Ashaji, is an Indian vocalist who has performed all over the world. She is most recognised for her work as a playback vocalist in Hindi films, but she has a much broader range of songs to choose from. Bhosle’s professional life began in 1943 and has lasted more than six decades. She has sang the background music for more than a thousand Bollywood films to date. Bhosle is the sister of the late playback singer Lata Mangeshkar, who is also a performer. Bhosle’s output spans cinema music, pop, ghazals, bhajans, traditional Indian classical music, folk songs, qawwalis, and Rabindra Sangeets, among other genres. She is renowned for her vocal range and is often praised for her flexibility. Her repertoire includes songs in more than 20 Indian and other languages, in addition to Hindi. Asha Bhosle claimed in 2006 that she has performed approximately 12,000 songs, a figure that has been confirmed by a number of different sources.

In September 2009, the World Records Academy, an international body that verifies world records, named her the “Most Recorded Artist” in the world, a title she has held since her debut. In 2011, she was officially recognised as the most recorded artist in the history of music by the Guinness Book of World Records, which was published in 2011. Her achievements were recognised by the Indian government with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008. The year before, she made her acting debut in the film Mai, for which she earned praise for her portrayal.
