Ari ‘fLoE’ Weintraub’s Passing: A Farewell to a FGC Legend
The fighting game community has been struck by the loss of one of its cherished members, a mentor, a rival, a training partner, and above all, a dear friend.
On October 16, 2023, we mourn the passing of Ari ‘fLoE’ Weintraub, who had just celebrated his 39th birthday.
Born in Park Ridge, Illinois, Weintraub began as a prominent figure in the Chicago-area Fighting Game Community (FGC). He then went on to make a name for himself on the global stage and ultimately relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada.
fLoE was a formidable competitor in a diverse array of fighting games, from Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom to Soul Calibur, Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat, Darkstalkers, and Injustice: Gods Among Us.
He was a part of one of the earliest large FGC eSports teams, Evil Geniuses, for multiple years, starting in 2011.
But fLoE was more than just a player; he was also known as a “lab monster,” pioneering cutting-edge techniques and serving as an exceptional training partner – all while keeping the atmosphere light with his humor.
Though he had retired from competitive play, fLoE remained active in the FGC, where he had forged close friendships worldwide. He also made contributions to various channels and shows, including Capcom Pro Talk, Cross Counter, and his own live stream.
Professionally, he worked as a game tester and held other roles, contributing to titles like Street Fighter 3: Third Strike Online Edition with Iron Galaxy, The Fast and the Furious, Cruis’n, and Target: Terror.
Weintraub’s untimely passing was the result of a series of strokes, and he was surrounded by his loved ones.
In a heartfelt message, Justin Wong expressed his grief, “My best friend Floe has passed away. Myself and his closest friends were there to be with him. He lived a great life and made many people happy with his streams. An amazing guy and he was there when I first started. I love you and keep a seat for me so we can run a set.”
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be sent to Chabad of Northbrook, Illinois, at 2095 Landwehr Road, Northbrook, Illinois 60062, or Chabad of Henderson at 524 Carnegie Street, Henderson, NV 89052.
